HDS communications reached out to our 2021 graduating students to hear from them in their own words about their experiences at HDS, the people who've helped and inspired them along their grad school journeys, and their plans for the future.

Words of Inspiration

"Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart."

—Winnie the Pooh

Each moment spent in person with you, my friends, no matter how brief, carried me through this program. I'm already making room for future moments to come. Thank you.

How I've Changed

Since starting at HDS, I have learned what compassionate leadership can look like at its fullest. I have met folks who I carry with me through my day to day life, during my runs, while I pour tea in the morning—I am inspired by their goodness and encouragement through lived experience.

Favorite Class or Professor

The class that was the most vocationally influential to me was C.E. Morgan's Creative Writing Intensive. I was able to grow my writing practice at a rapid pace with relatively minimal growing pains. Katie is a remarkable writing instructor, editor, and woman; every minute spent together was filled with light.

Message of Thanks

I would like to thank my parents and grandmothers for their unwavering trust in my success; my academic advisor, Diane Moore, for compassionately guiding me through my journey at HDS; all of my instructors, for their sharing their passion and kind leadership; the board and members of HDS Queer Rites for their joyful community; anybody who ever laughed at one of my jokes; every single friend—I carry all of you with me, every day; and my partner, Cameron, for everything, nearly every step of my HDS experience.

What I Hope to Be Remembered By

I hope to be remembered by my incredibly dazzling sense of humor and commitment to always add another seat to the table.

Future Plans

I would like to write more poems, maybe a book. I'll be applying to MFA creative writing programs this fall. I plan to run a marathon in 2022. I would like to continue to help others edit their writing and reflect the truest expressions of themselves.

Above all, I plan on loving my partner and my family to the fullest expression and reuniting with friends as the opportunities arise.
