HDS communications reached out to our 2021 graduating students to hear from them in their own words about their experiences at HDS, the people who've helped and inspired them along their grad school journeys, and their plans for the future.

Words of Inspiration

“And then I will be quiet, so I can hear you breathing. And then I will be breathing and you’ll remind me, do not rush.”

-Alexis Pauline Gumbs in the book Undrowned.

How I've Changed

I have finally realized that self-care is a necessary part of life. Through many moments of my self-identity crumbling, HDS taught me that my identity is not fixed. My appreciation for the small things has grown. I now notice the interconnection between all beings and have rooted myself into the earth. I am more embodied and at ease, most of the time. I look at the world through symbols and metaphors now, always noticing the subtle changes. I critique that which must be changed and that which is unjust and want to dedicate my life to creating a healthier planet. I realize my love for art and my passion for the environment, with HDS holding my toolbox of skills to set out into the future. Most importantly, I have learned that maintaining healthy relationships with friends and family always comes before grades and achievement.

Message of Thanks

I would like to thank Professor Moore for teaching me more than I thought I was capable of knowing.

Professor Parmigiani for offering a space of creative liberty, helping me to rediscover my passion for film.

Professor Rivera for holding structures of oppression accountable and giving me the tools to do so as well.

Professor McKanan for creating an inviting and regenerative learning space over Zoom.

Professor Berlin for helping me realize my own pain and ways to move through it.

Terry Tempest Williams for pushing me to my limits, showing me that I am worthy, and helping me realize that it is, in fact, a blessing to be passionate, intense, and sensitive.

Future Plans

I plan to be an environmental advocate, utilizing the tools of film, art, and writing to bring people in close connection with the environment around them. I will be working for Applied Research Institute—Jerusalem this summer, assisting in an environmental/climate justice project centered in Gaza and the West Bank. I'll continue my environmental work in the U.S. upon finishing this internship.
