The annual William James Lecture was presented on December 5, 2011, by [Arthur Kleinman](https://anthropology.fas.harvard.edu/people/arthur-kleinman), Esther and Sidney Rabb Professor of Anthropology in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Medical Anthropology in the Faculty of Medicine at Harvard University. Respondents were HDS faculty members Davíd Carrasco, Neil L. Rudenstine Professor of the Study of Latin America, and Kimberley C. Patton, Professor of the Comparative and Historical Study of Religion.
